Financial Counsellor

Join Meli’s Family Safety and Therapeutic Services team as a Financial Counsellor and make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families across regional Victoria.
In this impactful role, you will work with clients experiencing financial hardship, helping them stabilise their current circumstances and build the skills and confidence needed for longer‑term resilience. This role offers variety and flexibility, with work spanning multiple Meli sites across Geelong, Warrnambool, and Horsham. Regular travel is part of the position, and occasional overnight stays may be required. You’ll thrive in this role if you enjoy working both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team, bringing flexibility, initiative, and a collaborative mindset. Flexible working arrangements are also available.
About the Role
As a Financial Counsellor, you will:
- Provide high‑quality, client‑centred financial counselling to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship, using a strength‑based and developmental approach.
- Complete assessments, creditor negotiations, advocacy, and referrals to support the effective resolution of clients’ financial issues.
- Plan and deliver financial literacy education—individually, in groups, and within community settings—to strengthen financial capability.
- Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant client documentation in line with organisational, legislative, and funding body requirements.
Position Details
- Full Time, Fixed term until 30 June 2028
- 1 FTE working 38 hours per week
- $101,032 p/a + Super + Salary Packaging

What We're Looking For
We value individuals who bring dedication, empathy, and expertise to their roles. To succeed in this position, you will have:
- Demonstrated completion of a Diploma of Financial Counselling (or equivalent), together with relevant post‑qualification professional practice within a financial counselling or related service delivery setting.
- Eligibility for membership of the Financial and Consumer Rights Council Inc. (FCRC), with the ability to meet all standards, training, supervision, and ethical requirements as prescribed by the Council.
- Demonstrated knowledge of relevant legislation, financial institutions’ policies and practices, and financial counselling service delivery models, including an understanding of the systemic and structural causes of financial disadvantage.
- Proven ability to provide financial counselling, information, and advocacy to individuals and families experiencing financial hardship, including experience across intake, assessment, crisis intervention, and planned financial counselling.
- Demonstrated capacity to assess complex financial situations, identify priorities, and support clients to develop realistic and sustainable financial solutions.
- Highly developed written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to communicate complex financial information clearly, sensitively, and effectively with a diverse range of clients and stakeholders.
