Are you passionate about helping individuals and families regain control over their financial future? At Meli, we believe in creating pathways to financial stability and resilience. We’re looking for a dedicated Financial Counsellor or Senior Financial Counsellor to join our team, supporting clients experiencing rental and mortgage stress across Geelong and the Great South West.

This is a unique opportunity with two vacancies available, which may be filled at either the Financial Counsellor or Senior Financial Counsellor level depending on the successful candidates' qualifications and experience.

About the Role

As a Financial Counsellor or Senior Financial Counsellor, you will:

  • Provide direct financial counselling services to clients facing a range of financial challenges, including rental and mortgage stress.
  • Deliver client-centered, strength-based support, focusing on financial capability, resilience, and long-term stability.
  • Advocate on behalf of clients with creditors, negotiate financial arrangements, and refer to relevant support services where needed.
  • Conduct financial literacy sessions for individuals, groups, and the broader community to promote financial wellbeing.
  • Collaborate with System Navigators, Tenancy Assistance and Advocacy Workers (TAAP), and partner organisations to deliver holistic support.
  • Maintain accurate client records and ensure compliance with reporting requirements for relevant funding bodies.
  • Participate in professional development, team meetings, and reflective supervision to enhance practice.

In addition to the responsibilities above, the Senior Financial Counsellor will:

  • Provide supervision and mentoring for financial counselling students and intern financial counsellors.
  • Support the Team Leader with report preparation and data compilation for funding bodies, ensuring compliance with guidelines.
  • Take on additional leadership responsibilities within the financial counselling team, contributing to service development and program improvements.
  • Act as a key contact for complex cases, providing advanced case management support and guidance to colleagues.

Position Details

  • 2 Ongoing positions
  • 1 FTE working 38 hours per week (or possibility for 0.9FTE working 9 day fortnight)
  • $101,032 - $110,379 p/a + Super + Salary Packaging

What We're Looking For

We value individuals who bring dedication, empathy, and expertise to their roles. To succeed in this position, you will have:

For the Financial Counsellor role:

  • A qualification in Financial Counselling or actively working towards a Diploma in Financial Counselling.
  • Eligibility for membership with Financial Counselling Victoria (FCVic) and compliance with its training and supervision requirements.
  • Strong understanding of relevant legislation, financial institutions, and effective service delivery models.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide financial advice, crisis intervention, intake, and assessment for individuals and families.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with a client-centered approach.

In addition to the above, for the Senior Financial Counsellor role: 

  • A qualification in Financial Counselling with at least 5 years of relevant experience.
  • Eligibility for FCVic membership, meeting advanced training and supervision standards.
  • Proven leadership experience, including mentoring, case supervision, and team support.
  • Strong skills in report preparation, data management, and contributing to program development.
  • Expertise in managing complex financial cases, particularly related to rental and mortgage stress.
